Commonwealth War Grave Churchyard St. Amelberga Susteren

The Churchyard of the St. Amelberga Church in Susteren contains one Commonwealth burial. This casualty is pilot John Norman Payne Arkle of the 263 Squadron of the Royal Air Force. On November 18th 1944, Arkle left England with the Typhoon IB PD566 for a raid over the river Worm near Heinsberg (Germany). Near Roermond the Typhoon of Arkle was hit by a German Flak anti aircraft gun. The plane crashed in Linnerheide at 13.00. Arkle survived the crash and hided with help of the Dutch resistance. With the help of the resistance he tried to reach the British front lines to join the British forces. This attempt ended in a disaster, he got arrested by the Germans and was executed on November 26th 1944 in Susteren.
