Liberation Memorial Carei

This memorial, placed on a square in the city, was build by sculpture Vida Gheza and architect Anton Damboianu. It was erected in 1964 as commemoration to the liberators of this last occupied Rumanian city, Carei, on October 25th 1944. Since then this day is known as Army`s Day.

The monument is made in white stone. It is huge. The frontal opening measures 18 meters wide and 12 meters high. It is composed out of five symbolic elements: a peasant`s head, inspiring dignity and stability (symbol of the peasant rebellion), a gate similar to gates from Maramures (the sacrifice gate), a woman planting a flower (symbol of renewing), the face of a soldier (symbol of the active participant to the liberation of the country) and an Obelisk similar to the staples of the churches from Maramures (symbol of the eternal flame). On this obelisk in Rumanian the text "Glory to the soldiers of the Romanian Army, fallen in the battles for the liberation of the country" has been placed.
