Festung Posen - Fort V (Waldersee I) Poznań

Fort V was a component of fortress Pozna? and is constructed in the period 1879 - 1883. It was modernised in 1939 by the Polish army and used during the German occupation of Poland as munition storage and prison/POW camp.

In February 1945, a field hospital was established in the fort. When the Soviets invaded the fort, they took the wounded outside and shot them dead. Those who could not get out on their own were burned alive with flamethrowers. Many older Poznan residents remember well that when they came here in their youth they still found charred human remains.

After the war, the fortress was still used by the Polish army and demolished in the 1960s. Today it is a sea of rubble and dangerous to enter.
