Festung Posen - Fort Winiary (Citadel)

Fort Winiary was the main fort of fortress Poznań and is constructed in the period 1828 - 1842 and was used as POW camp for Allied prisoners during the German occupation of Poland. It was held for 5 days by the German forces, who centered their defence in this fort, during the Battle of Posen (1945), but was eventually taken on 23 February 1945 by the Red Army. The fighting was intense and the scars of that period can still be seen on fort Winiary.

The citadel can be visited.
