Fort IIa was built in the 80s of the 19th century as component of the Warsaw fortress. The powerful Transatlantic Radio Exchange (Transatlantycka Centrala Radiotelegraficzna) was operated from this fort during the Interbellum. Between 25 and 26 September 1939, fort IIa was scene of heavy fighting and was eventually taken by elements of the German 19th Infantry Division. The Germans thankfully used this radio exchange to establish contact with U-boats on the Atlantic ocean. Fort IIa was added to the German defence line around Warsaw at the end of 1944. On 16 January 1945, the radio exchange stopped broadcasting and it's radio masts were blown up.
