Memorial for Arthur Knaap

This memorial, at the Calvaire de Frize, commemorates the Dutch-Indian writer Arthur Knaap (1893-1938). He lived in Parijs and in 1914 he registered with the French Foreign Legion. At Frize he got his predecessor at the front, at this location. He fought among others at the Somme, the Champagne and Verdun and was distinguished two times with the Croix de Guerre for courage on the battlefield.
The letters he wrote were already partly published in 1916 in the Dutch literary magazine De Nieuwe Gids. He died in 1938 of a lung disease caused by battle gases he inhaled during the Great War.
In 2014, his life story, including his experiences at the front, was published in the book "Patria", which was also filmed.
