This memorial commemorates the Soviet evacuation of Tallinn (also known as the 'Soviet Dunkerque') beteween 27 and 31 August 1941. The Red Army succeeded in evacuating 165 ships, 28,000 passengers and 66,000 tons of equipment under constant fire from the mainland, aerial bombardments and attacks with German and Finnish motor torpedo boats.
About 11,000 Soviets (of whom 3000 civlillians) were killed during the evacuation. 13 war ships and 34 merchant ships were sunk.
