At the site of the former airfield, parts of the original German taxiway can still be found. The original airfield was a grass runway, during the war the Germans paved the runways with stones. The white pebbles in the middle served as followers and reflect when a lamp from an airplane shone on it. In this way the aircraft could take off more easily in the dark and no external light sources were needed. During the war most runways were painted green so that it looked like a lawn from the sky. The surrounding area was used by the Landwirtschaft for growing vegetables. Together with the hangars that looked like barn sheds it made no suspicion that this was a military airfield.
After the war, the runways were paved, and it was taken into use as a private airport and NATO base. The runway section on the photos was used as a taxiway.
