Remains Air Ship Base Paimbœuf

From January 1, 1918, the Americans took over a French naval airbase in Paimbœuf (St Nazaire), with the first American commander Lt LH Maxfield. The French were then active from March 1918 with airships from that location, with the aim of protecting the ports in the region against German submarine attacks.

The 4 concrete elements are remnants of that basis.

Lt. LH Maxfield died on August 24, 1921 in Hull, UK when his hot air balloon crashed together with 44 of the 49 people on board. He is buried in Arlington.
