Memorial POW Camp Heito

The Heito POW memorial marker is located at the end of an unnamed road in Linluo Township. The POWs in that camp labored in the sugar cane fields and in the old sugar refinery, which the Taiwanese call a sugar factory. However, by that time, the Japanese were apparently refining the sugar into airplane fuel or morphene for battlefield casualties. Consequently, in 1945 the Allies bombed the area a few times, and on at least one occasion missed the target and hit civilian locations around Pingtung City. A lot of the old Japanese airfields remain but are used by either the Taiwanese military or as civilian airfields.
