Salerno Landings Museum

This small museum tells the story of the Allied Landings at Salerno, 'Operation Avalanche' on September 9, 1943, and Salerno's subsequent temporary status of Italy's Capital. The museum is housed in a building that belongs to the city's administration and there is a mutual entrance with various city offices. No large signs, so a little hard to find.
It has limited opening times. It is recommended to call first to check if it is open. Entrance fee is 4 Euros for adults and 2 Euros for students.
It consists of 2 rooms only, and a few items are displayed outside. The Sherman tank that is (was?) also owned by the museum, was absent during our visit in October 2018. Outside you will also find a Breda AA gun, and a freight wagon that was used to transport Italian Jews to Auschwitz. Near the road, there are some pontoons used for a bridge.
The collection of photos and newspaper clippings lining the walls is very interesting.
The museum was opened in 2012 and consists of a collection of items and documents from the collection of the Parco del memoria della Campania, a regional organization. It is mostly used to tell the story of the war and Salerno's part in it to school classes and other interested groups, thus keeping the memory alive.

For current visiting hours, please contact the museum.
