Memorial Assistant-Surgeon James Thomson

This memorial, in the public gardens at Castle Hill, commemorates Assistant-Surgeon James Thomson who gave his life on 5 October 1854 in the Crimean War. He died of exhaustion after he voluntarily remained behind with 700 seriously wounded Russian soldiers after the Battle of Alma and managed to save 400 of them.
