The SS Creteboom was built by John Ver Mehr & Co., of Shoreham by the Sea, Sussex. during the First World War. It was intended to be used as a tug to tow barges of iron ore to Britain from Northern Spain, and was one of twelve tugs constructed from concrete because of the shortage of steel. It was launched in November 1919, too late to participate in the war effort, and was never used commercially. After being stripped of the metal boilers and engines in the 1930s, the concrete hull was towed to the river Moy, Ballina, to act as a sand stop. It remains there today.
