Crash Site Lancaster LM370 SR-K2, 101 Squadron RAF

Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.

On Thursday 18 November 1943 at 17.21 a Mk III Lancaster LM370-K2 from 101 Squadron RAF (Pathfinder Force) took off from RAF Ludford Magna to participate in a major attack on
Berlin. As one of 444 bombers, it was equipped with ABC equipment to disrupt German radar and was part of the first group of Pathfinders: an elite unit tasked to precede the main force to mark the target. On its way home, the Lancaster was attacked by a Junkers Ju88
of the 2./NJG 3 (Nachtjagdgeschwader), flown by Feldwebel Rudi Frank. Around 23.12 LM370 SR-K2 exploded above the field. All eight crew members (the eighth being the ABC operator) were killed, and parts of the aircraft were scattered over a large area. All crew members are buried in the Commonwealth War Graves section of the Municipal Cemetery at Schoonebeek.
