Memorial Sign Crash Location Mosquito Mk VI, HX966, EG-D, RNZAF 487 Squadron

Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.

On December 10, 1943, Mosquito HX966 EG-D of RNZAF 487 squadron took off from RAF Sculthorpe for a so-called strafing mission, destroying enemy military road and rail transport, in Northwest Germany. During this action, the plane was probably hit by a German fighter or FLAK and the plane crashed here, on the way home. Neither of the crew survived and they are buried in the Municipal Cemetery in Nieuw Dordrecht. There was one civilian casualty, Mr. Kwint, he was hit by an unexploded bomb and is buried at the public cemetery in Klazienaveen.
