Fortress Rammekens

This Dutch fort was built in 1547 and expanded numerous times throughout the ages. The fort was added to the German Atlantic Wall during the Second World War.

On the main rampart of the Fortress a foundation can be seen where a 60cm searchlight has been mounted. A Tobruk bunker at the head bastion of Fort Rammekens can be found in the opposite of the fundament of the search light. In the two bottom lines of the information panel which hangs at the beginning of the stairs reads:
The concrete slab on top of the main bastion dates from the Second World War. The Germans had a searchlight and a machine gun nest on the fortress.

When you take position in the hall with the open doors and with your back to the embrasure the following text can be distinguished high up on the wall:

1940

The creek and nature area surrounding the Fort. A remnant of the bombing of the dykes and inundation of Walcheren. This creek runs further on into the nature reserve when the dam holes were closed and the reclamation of Walcheren was a fact after the inundation in 1944.

Vlissingen - Veere and Westkapelle also have these creeks and natural areas as remnant of the dike breaches and flooding in 1944.
