These plaques are dedicated to:
- The men of the Military Mounted Police and Military Foot Police who gave their lives in the South-African War (2nd Boer War).
- The soldiers of the Army Service Corps who gave their lives in the South-African War (2nd Boer War).
- The 377 men of the Army Service Corps who gave their lives in the South-African War (2nd Boer War).
The memorial was first located within the Royal Garrison Church of St George's, Woolwich, but was removed to its present site following the destruction of that church by a German bombardment in 1944.
