Kiriwina Airfield (South Drome, Losuia) was established by the U.S. Army in July 1943.
Although the seizure of Kiriwina and Woodlark islands helped the Allies as they climbed the ladder toward the home islands of Japan, not much from the war years remains.
The Allied airstrip was near to where currently a flight arrives on Kiriwina several times a week from the mainland.
Because service has been reduced due to repairs being needed on the runway (it can only handle smaller aircraft), the flights to the mainland tend to sell out in advance.
PNG Air, for those traveling in the country, and Air Nuigini both have good websites for bookings, and independent travelers can use both to move around PNG.
