Memorials Selby Abbey

These plaques are to be found in Selby Abbey:

Plaques dedicated to the killed townspeople of Selby.

Two plaques in memory of choir members who were killed during World War One.

Wing Commander David Wilkerson (DSO., DGC., RAFVR) was 27 years old when he died during an aircraft crash..He was flying as a passenger. He had commanded 51 Squadron and had formed 578 Squadron.

Flying Officer Cyril Joe Barton (VC., RAFVR) was Halifax pilot with 578 Squadron. In the night of 30 March 1944 his aircraft was hit by enemy fighters just short of target. Three crew members bailed out to safety. Joe completed his mission and flew back to England. When all engines of the Halifax stopped, Cyril decided to make a crash landing in an unpopulated area. He lost his life in the crash but the remaining three crew members survived. Cyril Barton, 22 years old at the time of the crash, was awarded the Victoria Cross posthumously.
