On the spot where this memorial stands, 12 liberators of Oud Gastel were buried from November 1th 1944 to May 17th 1946.

The victims were moved in 1946 to these locations:
Butterworth, Ekins, Francis, Roberts, Strangleman, Packer, Kidman, Hewitt and Clark have been moved to Bergen op Zoom War Cemetery. Bangs and Gould have been moved to Geel War Cemetery and Lee was moved to the cemetery of Stampersgat.
All men except Clark are from Great Britain, Clark is a Canadian.

The memorial was reveiled on May 3th 1947

Besides this memeorial is also a memorial commemorating the victims of the war in Dutch East Indies.
