This giant memorial, constructed from 1912 tot 1915 and with a height op 107 metres, commemorates Commodore Perry and his victory in the Battle of Lake Erie, and the the lasting peace between Britain, Canada, and the United States that followed the War of 1812.
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819) was an American naval commander who was involved in many battles and campaigns. He is especially famous for his decisive naval victory against the British at the Battle of Lake Erie, on 10 September 1813 in the War of 1812. For this victory he was awarded the a Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress and the title "Hero of Lake Erie".
