Fort Gorgast was turned into a field hospital towards the end of the Second World War and managed to survive the heavy fighting during the spring of 1945.
The fort has also been used by the Red Army in the march in Berlin, part of it has been detonated when they left, because they did not want to leave it in a good state for the Germans. There is still military equipment in the trench, so swimming in there is strictly forbidden. The fort has been part of the "Fortress Küstrin", which was situated in part east of the Oder river with three forts, but Gorgast is the only one lying in the West of the river. When it was built in the 1890s, the plan was to have several forts which were supposed to support themselves via artillery, only weapons developed so fast that it was almost useless in that respect when it was finally completed. Later the NVA used it as an ammunition depository.
The fort is currently open to the public.
