At the Municipal Cemetery in IJlst are the graves of:

Alder Geert Poortema, Kpl 44 Painfbat, died in Afghanistan, 12-01-2008.

Gerrit Kaspersma, Soldier, died in Cornwerd. 12-05-1940.
Jurjen Hoomans, laborer, resistance fighter, died in Nijemirdum, 06-04-1945.
Hendrik Huizinga, fishing, resistance fighter, died in Nijemirdum, 06-04-1945.

IJlst General Cemetery also contains the grave of the following person, who fought for The Netherlands and who gave his life in the war in Afghanistan and/or Operation Enduring Freedom:

12 January 2008 , Corporal Aldert Poortema, aged 22
