Piazza 25 Aprile, Umbertide

Umbertide is a small market town located in the central Italian region of Umbria. In 1944, during the advance of the Allied forces up through Italy, Field Marshal Kesselring had established his HQ in the castle at Polgeto, just a few kilometers out of town.

On the morning of 25 April 1944, the Allies bombed the railway bridge, but unfortunately a few of the bombs missed the target, only by about 100 meters, and fell on the quarter of the town known as San Giovanni. The entire quarter was almost completely destroyed resulting in the death of 74 innocent civilians. Post war, it was decided that the quarter would not be rebuilt, but a new piazza would be created named ‘Piazza 25 Aprile’.

In 2010, the local council repaved the square, and during this work, the outlines of the original houses were marked in red brick, and where the entrances to the houses were a marble stone was laid which also indicates the original number of the house.
