Kerowagi Airfield was used as emergency landing ground (ELG) during the Second World War.
Kerowagi is part of the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. The Highlands were first explored in 1932. If an airstrip was required local people would be organised to trample the soil until it was safe enough for an aircraft to land and take off. Kerowagi had quite a suitable strip which was a one way strip only. Too low and you would hit a mountain face too high a similar fate. In 1968-1969 there was a good airstrip which was soil, rolled regular by a tractor pulling a concrete roller. Someone would report by radio to Port Moresby if the strip was safe for use as heavy tropical rain would render the strip useless and dangerous.
There are no traces left of this airfield. The airstrip has been used for housing thus it doesn't exist any more. However there is talk of building a new airstrip again.
