This monument commemorates the Ukrainian poet Olena Teliha. In 1939 she became a member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists. From 1941 on she lived in Kiev, where she was editor of a weekly newspaper about culture and art. With risk for her own live she defied the Nazi occupation of her country by writing articles. Finally she was arrested by the Gestapo. On February 21, 1942 she was executed, at the age of 35, in the Babi Yar execution site. Her husband shared in her fate.
