Liberation Route Location 4 - Operation Mallard Leveroy

On November 15, 1944 the first units of the 5th battalion Black Watch regiment entered Leveroy. The British took positions to the east of Leveroy and pushed forward the next day to their attack target Heythuysen. There was a lot of material damage in the village, with the destruction of the church, two mills and the school as the low point. Leveroy is still doing pretty well.

On May 30, 1942, a British Wellington bomber crashed on De Volharding windmill. Remnants of this can be seen in the Leudal Museum.

The resistance was also active in the region. On the Helenahoeve, near Opheij, people in hiding were accommodated and a pilot helpline was established. In addition, there was a combat team tasked with guarding two German soldiers. This caused serious problems during the German counterattack. Hiding places had to be changed several times and extreme risks were taken. An Austrian deserter was also helped to go into hiding. During the Grote Kerkrazzia on Sunday 8 October 18 men were taken to Germany. They all returned.
