On October 27, 1944 at 6.15 am the silence at the front near Nederweert, Ospel and Meijel was disrupted by the roar of German guns. The German plan was to break the corridor created during Market Garden with more than 20,000 people. The first goal was Asten.
The German armored tanks proved to be more useful in the peeling area than the allied tanks. The American troops that had buried themselves along the canal were completely surprised. In support of the German 9th Armored Division, paratroopers (Fallschirmjägers) crossed the Noordervaart at Hoebenbrug. Budschop, Winnerstraat, Kreijel and Waatskamp were taken.
After heavy fighting, Ospel and hamlet Horick fell into German hands on October 28. On October 30, the 7th American Armored Division and the 15th Scottish Division counterattacked.
