Phoenix-caisson Dyke-hole Rammekens / Ritthem

In February 1946 the last breach of the dyke at Ritthem was closed after an earlier attempt which had failed. This opening in the dyke has been filled with sand, clay, stones, torpedo webbing, steel containers, concrete Phoenix-caissons and Beetles to see here

These Phoenix-caissons had been used by the allied forces after the invasion for the construction of an artificial harbor at Arromanches. A number of these caissons which were no longer needed at Arromanches have been used at Ritthem. On the pictures parts of the Phoenix-caisson that appear above the sand are still visible.
