Dutch text on the sign at the Memorial (translated to English):
Poeldonk - May 12th 1940
At the German invasion of the Netherlands on May 10th the
Germans broke quickly trough the Peel defence. The Dutch
troops were forced to retreat behind the
Zuid-Willemsvaart. But this line was defended for
a long time because of the large number of German forces.
However, there was at the bridge of Dungen, especially here in
Poeldonk near this monument, on Pentecost Sunday, May 12th,
still a tough fight with a German
Reconnaissance. The Dutch army fought here
with great courage and bravery.
Three Dutch and eight German soldiers were killed and
on both sides there were several wounded soldiers. At this meeting
several farms were shot in flames and people
were driven to the village.
Even among the residents fell a victim, a boy
of thirteen. Every year on May 4th, the day of the
National Remembrance Day, the fallen are
commemorated at this monument.
