This memorial commemorates the liberation of Oirschot in World War II. There is also a bench at the monument.
Text on the sign:
the eagle and the lion liberate Oirschot… ..
Two figures play a central role in the history of the liberation of Oirschot: the eagle and the lion.
The eagle symbolizes the 101st Airborne Division, "Screaming Eagle". On September 17, 1944, the American division carried out the first airborne landings at Son en Best as part of Operation Market Garden. With this they herald the beginning of the liberation of Southeast Brabant.
The lion is the symbol of the 15th Scottish Division. Units enter the streets of Oirschot on October 24, 1944 and immediately push on to Spoordonk. The Princess Irene Brigade also has the lion as its symbol. Some patrols of this Dutch part operate in the area and cross the Wilhelmina Canal, with which they also contribute to the liberation of the village.
Thanks to the landing of the eagle, the lion can manifest itself in Oirschot.
The unfinished concrete upright refers to reconstruction and living in freedom. A freedom that can never be taken for granted. The park at the memorial was laid out by students from Kempenhorst College.
They represent the next generations who can tell the story behind the monument and keep the memory alive.
