This memorial stands on the grave of Major Amos Stoddard, at Fort Meigs. He was wounded on 1 May 1813 and died on 11 May 1813. He was buried on the spot where he was wounded.
In April and May 1813, during the War of 1812, the fort was sieged by the British. In the battle there were heavy casualties but the British failed to capture the fort and were forced to raise the siege.
