This memorial commemorates the massacre in Fort Mims, on 30 August 1813.
During the Creek War, coinciding with the War of 1812 (the Indians were armed by the British), on 30 August 1813 a force of Creek Indians (Red Stick Indians) stormed the fort and defeated the militia garrison. Afterward, a massacre ensued and almost all of the residents and defenders were murdered.. Over 500 people were killed in the massacre. About 100 Creek Indians were killed during the attack.
