This monument in front of Hoogeveen station commemorates the crash of pilot Albert A. Albino. He crashed his plane at Hoogeveen station on November 29, 1943.
The text on the accompanying plaque reads:
In the afternoon of November 29, 1943, a Lockheed P-38 Lightning of the 55th Fighter Group of the United States Air Force crashed at this location, killing the 24-year-old Second Lieutenant pilot Albert A. Albino. On that particular day, Albino accompanied Allied bombers during a bombing flight to Bremen when he was shot down by a German fighter on his way back to his home base in England. The rudderless Lightning crashed into the rail right next to the station building and disappeared deep into the ground. The pilot was not given the opportunity to leave his aircraft in time. This propeller was salvaged during the construction of the pedestrian tunnel in March 1978. The remains of Albert Albino, also found at that time, were transferred to his birthplace Portland in Oregon, USA and buried there.
