Julián Sánchez (1774-1832) was a high-profile guerrillero acting within or alongside the coalition army led by Arthur Wellesley (later Lord Wellington) during the Peninsular War (Guerra de la Independencia Espâñola). His constant harassement of the invading napoleonic troops won him the nickname of "El terror de los franceses". Very popular figure in Salamanca and North-West Spain.
The monument was commissioned by the City of Salamanca, and unveiled in October 1986.
