Memorial Fort Holmes

This fort on Mackanic Island was built by the British in 1812 and was then called Fort George. During an American attack on the fort on 4 August 1814, which was repulsed by the British, the American Major Andrew H. Holmes was killed. When the fort was handed over to the Americans after the war, it was named after him.
