Statue of Commodore Perry

This memorial at Franklin Square commemorates Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry (1785-1819). He was an American naval commander who was involved in many battles and campaigns. He is especially famous for his decisive naval victory against the British at the Battle of Lake Erie, on 10 September 1813 in the War of 1812. For this victory he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress and the title "Hero of Lake Erie".
