The text on the memorial:
the shovel holds a tear
This memorial commemorates four boys from Diepenheim who met their gruesome fate: Alex and Gerard Polak, Herman and Nico Herschel. A photograph of them, beaming with joy, carrying a shovel, is the last thing that reminds us of these young Jewish men from Diepenheim. The photograph was taken in the labour camp in Nunspeet in 1942 and sent to the secretary of the Diepenheim brass band. All four of them were a member of this band.
