Memorial First Gunfight Roermond

This memorial is located at the house at Kapellerlaan 64 in Roermond, on the occasion that World War II started in Roermond on 10 May 1940 in the Netherlands.

"On May 10, 1940 around 01:40 the first gunfight of the Second World War on Dutch soil took place on the Kapellerlaan in Roermond between the Dutch and the German Army.

German soldiers dressed as Dutch soldiers crossed the border in an attempt to secure the Maasburg at Roermond. These German soldiers were stopped on Kapellerlaan, after which the firefight started.

The Dutch soldiers seemed to be defeated until the moment that a Dutch soldier burst the explosives attached to the trees of the Kapellerlaan. After the explosions, the German soldiers flee."
