The ravelin and land gate of Willemstad were part of the Zuidwaterlinie. This line was built during the 17th century. A long waterline with in between fortresses that the enemy should stop from the south. These defenses were in use before and during the First World War. Before the Second World War, the line was put back into use but played no significant role in the May days of 1940. Parts of the fortresses were still used by the Germans in the Second World War.
