Memorial Sign Crash Location Lancaster MK III ND963 OL-H

Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.

On Monday 22 May 1944 at 22.44 a Mk III Lancaster ND963 OL-H from 83 Squadron RAF Pathfinder Force, took off from RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire, part of a formation of 235 bombers, the target being Braunschweich. Shortly after crossing the Dutch coast, the aircraft was intercepted by a German night fi ghter and caught fi re. Following several explosions, it crashed around 00.45 hours northwest of Nieuw Weerdinge. Four crewmembers survived, two landing in Nieuw Weerdinge (one having a broken leg). The third came down at Roswinkel and the fourth in Emmer-Compascum. All four were taken prisoner. Three of the crew died and are buried in the Commonwealth War Graves section of the Municipal Cemetery at New Dordrecht.
