Memorial Sign Crash Location Lancaster MK II LL684 JI-N

Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.

On March 22, 1944, Lancaster MK II LL684 JI-N of RAF 514 squadron crashed on this site.
The aircraft departed from Waterbeach in Lincolnshire and took part in a raid on Frankfurt that night. It presumably suffered technical problems that caused the crew to return home when they got attacked by a German nightfighter north of Kamerlingswijk. Five crewmembers perished, two managed to escape by parachute but were later captured by the German Wehrmacht. In the crash no civilian victims were involved nor were there any damaged objects.

Crew Members:
John Bernard Underwood RAF KIA pilot
Albert William Johnson RAF KIA flight engineer
Ivor John Frederick Rich RAF KIA navigator
Richard Jock Day RAF KIA wireless operator
Wyman D. McPhee RCAF POW bombaimer
Robert C. Sime RAF POW gunner
Howell John RAF KIA tailgunner
