In 1939 Dutch troops were building casemates and defensive positions at the Maas-Waalcanal. They were living in the homes of local civilians in Weurt.
The Maas-Waalcanal was to be the frontline to hold the Germans in case of an attack.
After Market Garden Canadians were encamped in Weurt. They used the livingroom of the Gelsing family who lived near the river Waal. From the northern faced livingroom they could watch the German occupied Betuwe. From the Gelsing home nowadays only the fundaments are visible.
From the watchtower (2017) there is a splendid sight of the area including the Oversteek bridge.
