Memorial Sign Crash Location Lancaster MK III DV-287 SR-N

Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.

On 14th January 1944 a Lancaster Mk III - DV287 SR-N from 101 Squadron RAF took off from RAF Ludford Magna (West Hull) to participate in a raid on Braunschweig with a total of 298 bombers; this aircraft had a German-speaking officer on board and was equipped with ABC apparatus to disrupt German communications. On their way home, the Lancaster was intercepted and attacked by a German night fighter. Fire broke out on board the Lancaster, and the pilot lost control, and the aircraft crashed. Of the nine-man crew, only Alexander Hoyle Walmsley survived and managed to escape. The Wehrmacht did not undertake a search because there were usually 7 crew members, not 9. The other crew members are buried at the Municipal Cemetery in Nieuw Dordrecht.
