Project Lost Wings '40 - '45 has placed Memorial Signs in the Municipality of Emmen on the places where airplanes crashed during the Second World War.
On 24th February 1945 at 14:00, 2nd Lieutenant Sylvester Joseph Evans, flying a P51 Mustang 44-11750 "Lonesome Polecat", took off from Chièvres Air Base in Belgium, tasked to escort bombers to Bremen. During this mission "Lonesome Polecat" was fired on by German Flak at about 3 kilometers southeast of the Amsterdamsche Veld. As a result, the aircraft was damaged, and following a successful emergency landing, the pilot was taken prisoner of war. There were no civilian casualties as a result of the crash or damage.
