Monument in The Amsterdam Lyceum

In the auditorium in the main building of The Amsterdam Lyceum is a memorial plaque of natural stone. It is dedicated to the teachers, former students, and students who died during World War II in the Netherlands, in concentration camps, and in the Dutch East Indies. (That main school building itself was designated a national monument (rijksmonument) in 1996.) The memorial plaque was unveiled in 1947. The Dutch text is translated below.

In memory of our
teachers and former students
who in the fight against
tyranny sacrificed their
lives in the years
1940-1945
loyal to the fatherland,
I will remain until death.

Next are the words:
Waakt over de vrijheid waarvoor zij vielen!
(Guard the freedom for which they fell!)

Following the text are the names of 4 teachers, 75 alumni, and 17 students who died during World War II in the Netherlands, in concentration camps, and in the Dutch East Indies.

A second plaque depicting the victims also hangs there.
