From 1935 to March 1945, the EL-DE-Haus housed the headquarters of the Cologne Gestapo. The name EL-DE-Haus (the phonetic representation of LD) comes from the initials of the Catholic businessman Leopold Dahmen, who had the complex built and rented it to the Gestapo during construction. This organization set it up for its own purposes and builted ten prison cells in the basement.
Since an extension in 2012, NS-DOK (documentation center on National Socialism) has occupied approximately 2800 square meters of the EL-DE-Haus.
