Pax Christi Flanders and the City of Hasselt took the initiative in 1998 to commemorate women in the war with the monument to the 'Unknown War Woman'. After all, they thought that in addition to the Unknown Soldier, which is rightly commemorated, there should also be attention for women who have been and are victims of war in so many ways.
However, the monument to the Unknown War Woman not only wants to see the woman as a victim, but also to emphasize her strength. After all, women also maintain life in wartime. Together with the Unknown Soldier, the Unknown Warwoman warns of the destructive nature of every war.
The statue is a design by sculptor Jan Calmeyn.
