Memorial Liberation Aalst

Belgium was mainly occupied by the 15th German Army. During September 1944, most of the Belgian territory was liberated.
The Allied troops that reached Belgium were primarily the Second British Army and the First American Army. They were assisted by army units consisting of British, American, Canadian, Polish and Belgian Piron Brigade troops.
On September 3, 1944, Aalst is liberated around 11:15 PM when English trucks enter the Grote Markt. Canadian tanks enter the city via Gentsesteenweg.

A memorial plaque was unveiled in 2004 in the entrance to the old town hall.
