Memorial Liberation Tournai

The Allied troops that reached Belgium were primarily the Second British Army and the First American Army. They were assisted or succeeded by army units consisting of British, Americans, Canadians, Poland and the Belgian troops of the Brigade Piron. Belgium was mainly occupied by the 15th German Army.

During September 1944, most of the Belgian territory was liberated. The Allied armored vanguard crossed the Belgian southern border in the province of Hainaut.
On September 3 at 2 p.m. Tournai, the first Belgian city, was liberated by an army of British and Americans.

The belfry, dating from the 12th century and oldest in Belgium, has a plaque in memory.
